Petra Billings is fully licensed for surveying Common Dormouse, one of the European Protected Species which inhabits woodlands and must be considered prior to commencement of any woodland management. She can advise on the likelihood of their presence and can carry out nest tube surveys to confirm it. Apart from nest-tubes, other signs of dormice are hazelnuts with their distinctive nibble-marks and a smooth inner edge around the hole in the nut, or their summer or winter nests.
Petra can advise on woodland management to improve habitat for dormice, for example, by encouraging an adequate shrub layer and ground vegetation and by improving connections between areas of habitat within the woodland.
